New features in Converter 1.0.9

An intermediary version, not released on AMO.

Type Feature Example Comment
* Premium feature Support for custom units n/a The Converter now features full custom units support, including regular expressions, daisy chained conversions and so on. This is probably one of the few most important features ever.
new preferences Choose which features to enable n/a You can now decide explicitly which features of the Converter you want enabled:
  • Unit conversions
  • Time conversions
  • Currency conversions
  • Price comparisons

Interestingly, this is akin to retronyms in linguistics: this was never requested before currency conversions were introduced; in fact, the only request of the sort at the time was the ability to disable currency conversions. Once currency conversions have matured enough, I started receiving requests to disable the "other" conversions (because some users are only interested in currency conversions).

improvement Support for ¼, ½, ¾ in Imperial measurements
  • 1½"
  • 10 ¼ inches
Over time, several users have requested support for these special characters, when used in Imperial measurements (as illustrated by the examples). These are now properly supported.

Caveat: These special characters (¼, ½, ¾) are only supported for Imperial unit conversions in this specific context. They are not properly supported for formats such as 13½ mm, 10½ miles, 100½ EUR, 20½°C or anything else besides relatively small Imperial measurements. Trying to implement support for such formats (which nobody uses) would have slowed down execution for no real benefit. Please let me know if you actually encounter such formats in the wild.

new notation Supporting the alternate notation for pounds
  • 100 ₤
  • ₤100
Compare £1 to ₤1; the former was already supported; the latter is also supported now.
bug fix Fixed a numerical notation for currencies
  • USD 10.000.000
  • USD 10,000,000
The values in the examples were improperly converted in Converter 1.0.0. This was fixed.
minor improvement Restructured the preferences n/a The refinement of the conversion options above prompted me to radically restructure the option grouping in the preferences window. While the new setup might be a bit strange to veteran users, it's certainly more ergonomical and better organized from a logical point of view.
minor bug fix Keyboard shortcuts in Preferences n/a Fixed a bug that prevented keyboard shortcuts (Enter and Esc) from working in the preferences window (to confirm, respectively cancel the changes).
minor inconsistency Fixed some icons n/a Some icons within the Converter interface were still showing the old British/French flags logo. Those were updated to reflect the new identity.
